Nokhum Bomze: On Golden Bridge

On the Golden Bridge
by Nokhum Bomze

On the golden bridge of sunset
I stride in dream to the horizon –
In the white flight of the sea gulls
I recognized my life.

Here high on the coast
on a cliff of stone
I sit alone

Ships sail away from port
the ships will come back
to this place
But I with my Yiddish word
I stride on the golden bridge
of sundown
with sadness and regret
Oh God:
In the gaudy play of colors
I heard the whisper of death.
