Horvitz, Ber: From the Poem “Bread”

from the poem “Bread”
by Ber Horvitz

Night. Exhaustion. Heavy stillness
on the floor the tired people lie.

Flung and scattered over broken theater floor
tired people sleep. Night. Late.

At midnight a little boy cries:
-“mommy I’m afraid – let’s go home”

Mother wakes – into this strange palace,
presses her child close to her shirt…

-” If you cry, I’ll leave you here alone
a little boy must sleep – and this is now our home”.

Night. Exhaustion. Heavy stillness all around
tired people sleeping on the ground.
