Moishe Kaufman: The Sun Rises

The Sun Rises
by Moishe Kaufman

The sun rises, the sun shines
plays there with her golden rays,
comes night, dark night
and with a black wall blocks her way
and somewhere there the sun is lost.

A woman moans, a woman bleeds
a last wail, with luck a child.
A mother cries, a mother laughs,
she’s been sent good fortune
leads her son to the khupa __________
the son moans and cries,
now with white hair and blind eyes

The flame burns, the flame sinks
flames and sinks, goes out,
a person falls, a person dies
the earth opens her mouth
swallowed fast, the end.
