A sleepless night in storm and in dust
Silent women peer from windows.

And sleepy and worried children wait:
with pity for their fathers and for the horses too!

This dark night chokes and frightens,
Such a night is filled with dread of death.

In the blink of an eye this night
can be ripped by blood and fright.

Racing riders come together
the gather near the palace, fill the courtyard

Will strange riders come silent and unexpected?
Mute mothers, mute children turn out the lights…

Night – and – dread and heavy silence. Mounting blows! –
Why did you foolish women lock the doors?

And the doors break open with wildness strength
Fathers, brothers come in rainsoaked and spent.
