Elkhonan Vogler: Two Birch Trees Beside The Road

Two Birch Trees Beside The Road
by Elkhanon Vogler

Twilight rides over the blue neighborhood,
and chases the clouds – his swift white horses;
They stamp their hooves – it thunders and rains –
the road speaks – and the nut tree hears:

-The sky and the mountains alone are eternal,
And I, the clay road am eternal too.
And for you my grandchild it is good
that you were born a common tree –
not a person of flesh and blood….

You, my young man will grow taller,
than the wise one’s deep understanding….
Under you in his grave bones will rot –
…Quiet, twilight, the nobleman, rides through the poor land –
And the road has ended his tale
