Miriam Ulinover: Girl Without a Comb

Girl Without Comb
by Miriam Ullinover

The note before Girl Without Comb

“Sitting where the night has its nest
are my songs like boarders oif kest”*

The teeth of the comb are broken
A comb is necessary – more necessary is a bagel
So where, who will comb my hair
the gray empty lonely space will comb my braid…

———————————————————–

*Oif Kest: was the condition of being supported
gratis in someones home (often by a father in-law)
because you were studying Torah

The second verse of Meydl on Kam
is mostly unreadable and the last two lines
are missing.
